2023 Hampton Roads Housing Symposium

The Hampton Roads Association of Real Estate Brokers (HRAREB) and Virginia Housing and Community Development Corporation (VHCDC) proudly present the 2023 Hampton Roads Housing Symposium, a forum for meaningful exchange of ideas on increasing home ownership among black and brown families.  The event will be held at Norfolk Slover Library from 8am to 4pm, Saturday, March 18th.

The symposium will feature a range of experts and thought leaders who will share insights and strategies on how to improve access to home ownership for underrepresented communities.  Real estate professionals will have the opportunity to network with like-minded professionals and gain a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by black and brown communities and the resources and tools to help increase home ownership in this market.

The Symposium is open to all real estate professionals, enthusiasts, lenders, investors, and first-time home buyers.  The agenda includes...

  • The State of Housing in Black America Report - National Association of Real Estate Brokers Regional Vice President Chandra Patterson will present the report, its findings, and implications for Hampton Roads.

  • Mortgage Financing and Down-Payment Assistance Programs - Representatives of Bank of America, Fulton Mortgage Company, and ABNB Federal Credit Union will discuss the current mortgage climate, mortgage programs, down-payment and closing cost grants, and overcoming challenges to securing a mortgage.

  • Wealth Building & Financial Resources - Representatives from Apex Financial Group of Virginia, JYE Financial & Accounting Solutions, and LP Insurance Agency will discuss wealth building strategies for real estate professionals and first-time home buyers.

  • Housing Choice Voucher Home Buyer Programs - Representatives from Newport News, Norfolk, and Portsmouth Redevelopment and Housing Authorities will discuss how they are using the HUD Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) to help recipients secure mortgage financing to purchase a home.

  • Community Investment Opportunities - Virginia Housing and Community Development Corporation (VHCDC) will discuss how innovation and inclusion can create affordable housing opportunities for low-to-moderate income households in Hampton Roads.

  • Fair Housing Update - The Virginia Fair Housing Office and HUD Office of the Secretary will discuss State and Federal Fair Housing laws, recent improvements/updates, and their impact on black and brown households

  • Mortgage & Real Estate Development Financing - Virginia Housing will discuss their mortgage financing and real estate development financing programs.

  • What's New in Real Estate Closing/Settlement - The Law Office of Kevette Elliot, PC will discuss the Real Estate Settlement and Procedures Act (RESPA), title insurance, and key trends and developments in real estate closings/settlement.
