VHCDC Hosts Financial Mega Conference - CapCon2018

Date Published: Jun 21, 2018

Suffolk, VA — Virginia Housing and Community Development Corporation (VHCDC) announced today the launch of CapCon (Capital Conference) – an annual event that challenges, engages and encourages attendees to develop and execute financial plans for credit building, entrepreneurship, economic development, wealth building, and social investing. CapCon is formatted to deliver financial hacks that empower individuals, families, and small business owners to improve their personal and business finances, build their small business, create wealth, and invest in their communities.

CapCon began in 2005 as a conference where small business owners converged to learn how to access capital and credit and secure myriad financing for their ventures. The current iteration expands the range of financing to include ALL forms of capital, personal and business, and wealth building strategies. It enables financial experts and industry professionals to pull back the covers on their industries and help customers (attendees) understand how their industry really works!

A powerful feature of CapCon is CapTalks, presented in the form of short, powerful talks (12 minutes or less) – no commercials, sales pitches, or B—S—. CapTalk presenters “educate” the audience, imparting critical financial tools and resources they can deploy immediately. Presenters featured at CapTalks will be available at CapShops for one-on-one consultation during throughout the day. Access to CapShops is included with General Admission.

CapCon 2018 is also host to the MBE Empowerment Fund™ Fundraising Gala. The MBE Empowerment Fund™ is a community development venture capital fund created to provide micro-equity investments in small, disadvantaged businesses. The Fund offers competitive scholarships for continuing and special education classes and coursework in entrepreneurship. VHCDC is calling attention to the need for increased investments in small, disadvantaged businesses and the urgency for building and sustaining generational wealth in communities of color. Invited guest speakers include Congresswoman Maxine Waters and famed producer Will Packer.

Congresswoman Maxine Waters is considered by many to be one of the most powerful women in American politics today. She has gained a reputation as a fearless and outspoken advocate for women, children, people of color and the poor. Elected in November 2016 to her fourteenth term in the U.S. House of Representatives, with more than 76 percent of the vote in the 43rd Congressional District of California, Congresswoman Waters represents a large part of South Central Los Angeles including the communities of Westchester, Playa Del Rey, and Watts and the unincorporated areas of Los Angeles County comprised of Lennox, West Athens, West Carson, Harbor Gateway and El Camino Village. The 43rd District also includes the diverse cities of Gardena, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Lawndale, Lomita and Torrance.

Congresswoman Waters serves as the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Financial Services. An integral member of Congressional Democratic Leadership, Congresswoman Waters serves as a member of the Steering & Policy Committee. She is also a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus, and member and past chair of the Congressional Black Caucus.

Will Packer is Founder and CEO of Will Packer Media, a first-of-its-kind media company, producing episodic scripted and unscripted series across television and digital platforms, compelling content for brand clients, and its own operated platforms.

As Producer and Founder of the Los Angeles based production company, Will Packer Productions, Packer oversees all aspects of the business. Prior to launching his own company in 2013, he co-founded Rainforest Films with director Rob Hardy in the summer of 1994 while both were engineering students at Florida A & M University. After graduating magna cum laude from Florida A&M University (FAMU) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering in 1996, Packer decided to forego lucrative job offers in the field of engineering to capitalize on his entrepreneurial instincts and his passion for filmmaking.

CapCon2018 is Saturday, August 11th at the Newport News Marriott @ City Center, Newport News, Virginia. The event starts at 10am. VHCDC expects more than 600 guests. Visit the CapCon2018 website @ www.capcon.org for additional information.
